The batch script that you ran would have picked them up, but it is worth a 2nd look, nonetheless. You can also hide the specific KB973879 update by opening Windows Updates (accessible via control panel) and click "View Available Updates". Also changed the setting to install updates when I tell it to. Could you post those updates?

Safe mode (Except command prompt, which I didn't try) and other attempts proved hopeless since Windows just wanted to finish the installation. Glad we could be of help! Got to love Microsoft! I just tried to install SP2 for Windows Vista. This update, which was previously released, is no longer available.
Antiviruses are very complex software, and work deeply with the OS in different ways. Finally got it fixed! Techerator is now on my favorites list and will be my first stop for technical assistance. Right now I'm on safe mode.
