It's one of those, right click on the icon on the desktop or in the Program Files off of the Start menu button, you go to Properties. Some sources, including Microsoft’s Physical Address Extension, seem to think that the PAE kernel was only for server editions, at least initially.
Ricky: what is your hardware configuration? I do not mean to recommend this method of testing. for example SQL server is coded to use PAE but your average game isn't. The preceding calculation also produces an architectural limit on the use of physical memory by 32-bit Windows with a PAE kernel.

Also, setting AGP aperture to a smaller value can return some memory to the OS.So, I repeat - Vista would give you 4GB. A 512MB video card gives you a max of 3.5GB available for your RAM, because there is 1GB less of address space available.
Microsoft disabled these features in none server OS for a reason. 32bit apps can only address 32bit worth of memory unless they are coded for PAE.
