To get the latest updates, run LiveUpdate until there are no more updates available. The HDD activity light stops when this happens but the computer itself does not crash, freeze, or restart. I haven't noticed this before> the Event log has the following messages Faulting application name: MsMpEng.exe, version: 4.0.9200.16384, time stamp: 0x5010a938These errors only started today for me. If this is the case, it is possible there is some physical problem with the location of those files on the disc? It took well over an hour to run with both checked but it identified a bad cluster at exactly the point it was freezing during the virus scan. But it consumes a large amount of memory about 70% and the list would load very slowly....

Prior to MSE I had Microsoft One Care. The point at which deep scan stops is 98% through (at which point it claims to have found over 35,000 issues!) At the time, it says it's scanning hkey_local_machine\system; this disappears Avg Freezes While Scanning Avast!,after failing to scan, will start freezing up my computer by using 99% of the CPU processes. After the computer is restarted, the scan starts automatically. Best Free Antivirus I should also mention that I attempted a boot scan and that froze as well. The last recommendation I had was to uninstall my ZoneAlarm to see if that helps.
I tried switching Windows to Safe Mode but still had the failure in deep scan. Have you changed any settings in Avast?4. Thread Status: Not open for further replies. http://brainybooks.net/windows-10/virus-windows-update-has-internet-other-apps-don-t.html Eventually, I just click the "Stop" button to end the scan and Avast will stop the scan and report that "no threats were detected, scan aborted by user" (or similar language).

I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the program and thought I had solved the problem. It does not seem to get stuck on the same file name--other than as explained above6. bcvaidyanath Apr 21, 2010 12:22 PM (in response to rakesh.p) I hav a vista, no other antispyware or antivirus otherthan mcafee, and i am unable to get the file name as It stops somewhere through the virus scan as well. If you have bad sectors, it will fix the problem and buy you time until you can replace your hard drive.
